The sights of Český Krumlov

What we recommend visiting

The distance between Český Krumlov and Prague is about 180 km which makes it about a 2.5 hour trip by car. Once in town, it is almost obligatory to visit these sights.

Český Krumlov Castle and Chateau

After Prague Castle, the grounds of Český Krumlov Castle and Chateau are the second largest in Bohemia and one of  largest in Central Europe. The original Gothic castle was founded in the 13th century and in the second half of the 16th century the Rožmberks rebuilt it into a splendid Renaissance residence. There are forty palaces, concentrated around five courtyards, hosting more than 300 chambers and halls. The castle theater, dating its history from 1765, is one of the oldest surviving theaters of its kind in Europe.

Český Krumlov - Square

The center of the town marks the Svornost Square with its 16th century Renaissance town hall and many historic houses with arcades. You mustn't miss the unique Latrán Street in the former suburbium occupied by mostly Renaissance houses with storeys planted on stone cracks. There are also several museums and galleries near the square.

Český Krumlov - St. Vitus Church

It is the most important originally early Gothic church of St. Vitus from the beginning of the 14th century, later rebuilt and restored to its original form between the years 1899 and 1900. The three-aisled hall building with a frontal tower is the culmination of the development of the Gothic style of the House of Luxembourg era. Inside there is a late Gothic sanctuary and a late Gothic organ loft.

Český Krumlov - Latrán

Latrán

Latrán, once an independent town, is another historic district across the river, north of the Inner City, in the suburbium to which it belonged in the Middle Ages. It is connected to the rest of the city with the famous wooden Barber’s Bridge. It hosts a large number of smaller Gothic houses. Adjacent to this neighborhood you may find another one called Neustadt, mainly situated in the Nové Město street. Contrary to its name, archaeological excavations have shown that this neighborhood was the home of the first settlers of the city who came here in the 5th millennium BC.

Český Krumlov Theatre

The only open-air theatre with a revolving auditorium in the world is located in the castle park opposite the Bellarie Summer Palace. It is a truly beautiful and unique cultural monument.
