Vienna, the capital of Austria
The UNESCO World Heritage List
Vienna, the capital of Austria, sits 55 km from the border of the Czech Republic. The same distance will take you to Hungary and only 40 km to the border with Slovakia. The historic center was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2001. The sights of Vienna
What we recommend visiting
The distance between Vienna and Prague is about 300 km and about 4 hours by car. To travel to Austria, you need to buy a vignette to Austria for 9,40 EUR. We will be happy to arrange it for you on request.
In this beautiful city it is a must to visit the following sights.
Schonbrunn Castle
The former summer residence of the Habsburgs amazes with its sumptuous imperial chambers and magnificent garden grounds. The castle hosted a number of emperors, Maria Theresa who lived here, Franz Joseph who was born here in 1830, and Elisabeth who resided here. Schonbrunn Castle is one of the most beautiful Baroque complexes in Europe and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to historical significance, unique location and magnificent furnishings. The castle has a total of 1441 rooms, of which 45 be visited. The interior furnishings are in the Rococo style. The Million Chamber, lined with rosewood and decorated with precious miniature paintings from India and Persia, is one of the most magnificent Rococo rooms ever. In the Hall of Mirrors, little Mozart made music as a six-year-old prodigy.
Vienna City Hall
Built between the years 1872 and 1883 by Friedrich von Schmidt, the master builder of Cologne Cathedral, it holds the title of Vienna's most famous secular building of the Neo-Gothic style. The Vienna City Hall is the seat of the office of the Mayor of Vienna and the meeting place of the City Senate. The City Hall courtyard is one of the largest courtyards in Europe. Various events are often held inside and in front of the building. Each December, the Christmas market in front of town hall sets the festive mood. And in the winter months, the Rathausplatz and the town hall park are transformed into the most beautiful ice rink in the world.
St. Stephen's Cathedral
It is the symbol of Vienna. Its construction began in the 12th century and today it is considered the most important Gothic building in Austria. It has a total of four towers gifted with 13 bells of which the most famous one is called Pummerin. It is the second largest hanging bell in Europe. On the roof of the cathedral stands a two-headed eagle, the emblem of the city of Vienna and the Austrian national emblem, made out of coloured roof tiles. In addition to several precious altars and side chapels, you can also admire the temple's remarkable treasure trove of gold- and jewel-encrusted relics, monstrances, liturgical texts, books and vestments.
Vienna State Opera
It is one of the world's leading opera houses, where you can enjoy a truly varied offering of the highest quality. In fact, the programme of this renowned venue changes every day. There are 60 different operas and ballets on offer. The range of the opera repertoire is unrivaled in international terms.
Vienna Giant Wheel
The Giant Wheel in the Prater in Vienna is one of the symbols of the city. From a height of almost 65 meters, it offers a magnificent view of this metropolis on the Danube. The heel was built in 1897 for the upcoming 50th anniversary of the coronation of Emperor Franz Joseph. Since then, it has been an integral part of the city's skyline. It stands right at the entrance to the Prater. The Giant Wheel has also starred several times in Hollywood blockbusters such as James Bond.
