The city filled with history

Located in the north-east of the country, about 70 km from the border with Poland, Berlin has been the capital of the Federal Republic of Germany since 1991. The first historically documented mention of Berlin dates back to 1244. In the 1920s, Berlin became a European metropolis with a rich political, scientific and, above all, cultural life. The city's tolerance was ended for a time by the rise to power of the fascist Adolf Hitler. After the Second World War, the city was largely destroyed, and at the beginning of the Cold War, Berlin came into conflict between the victorious powers, leading to the political division of the city that resulted in the construction of the Berlin Wall on 13 August 1961. Today, Berlin is once again a cultural city filled with history with many interesting modern buildings worth visiting.

The sights of Berlin

What we recommend visiting

The distance between Berlin and Prague is about 350 km takes about 4 hours by car. There is no need to buy a vignette to get to Germany.

In this interesting city we recommend visiting the following sights.

Říšský sněm

Reichstag

It is the seat of the German parliament and a symbol of Germany's national unity. It survived a fire in 1933 and the extensive bombing at the end of World War II. One of the most important events of the rise of fascism is also linked to this building. On the evening of 27 February 1922, a fire was reported in the main hall of the Diet. The fire was interpreted as an act of terrorism by the Communists, allowing the Nazis to quickly seize power in the country. Today, however, the Reichstag has been transformed into an interesting modern building, where the German Bundestag meets and also hosts various concerts and music festivals.

Berlin Cathedral

This Protestant church located on the famous Museum Island in the central part of the city was first mentioned in texts from the 15th century. The church took its present form in two recent major rebuildings, first in Neoclassical style, led by the famous architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel, and later in Neo-Renaissance style. During World War II, the church was damaged by Allied bombing and was not reconstructed until the 1970s.

Berlin Tower

The tower is located in the center of Berlin and is probably the most important landmark of the German metropolis. It is located in the center of Alexanderplatz and was built between the years 1965 and 1969. At 368 meters high, it is the tallest free-standing building in the European Union and the fourth tallest building in Europe. At its top you can also visit the excellent restaurant that hosts up to 200 people.

West Gate

This interesting modern building stands in the western part of Berlin. It is a high-rise building connected by glass bridges and is a hub for offices, hotels, apartments, gastronomy and culture. It is interestingly designed to have a natural energy supply - be it air, water, cold, heat or light. Visitors may enjoy a walk through nature and jungle-like terrain.
